Beautiful theatre, richly decorated, a little gem. It was not the easiest to find after visiting the Residenz. For me it was worth the visit, however I understand those who complain to pay 5 euros to access it.

Nice to look at but it’s a shame you pay to see it. If we hadn’t gotten the full ticket (including the residence and treasury) I would have deductibles it as a rip off.

The Cuvilliés Theatre (€3.50 per adult) is a stunningly beautiful theatre room that is well worth seeing when visiting Residenz in Munich. Opening hours change throughout the year so best to reference the Residenz website prior to your visit. During our summer visit, it was open 2pm to 6pm (Mon-Sat) and 9am to 6pm (Sundays).
Basically, this is a short and quick visit inside one of the ground floor wings of the residence to see a 1950s reconstruction of the late 18th-century masterpiece Rococo theatre designed by Bavarian artist Franciois de Cuvillies.
Sadly, the original theatre was badly damaged during WWII and had to be rebuilt. What you see today is suppose to be a meticulous recreation, making use of the delicately carved and gilded boxes from the original theatre. It is very beautiful and easy to enjoy.
Have a quick walk around the floor looking up at the box seats and take as many pictures as you like. Imagine what it would have been like to attend a performance two hundred years ago. The Cuvilliés Theatre can be conveniently visited in 10-15 minutes before continuing with other intened sightseeing at Residenz or in this area of Munich.
Note: You can purchase a combo ticket (€3.50 per adult) that includes entrance into the Residence Museum and Treasury as well.

This is a great classical theater. A lot smaller than I was expecting and I hoping to see the upstairs area but unfortunately they had that blocked off. Still really cool to see and visit. Just really short and doesn’t take anytime at all to see and be done.

How to get here: the main entrance to the museum complex is in Residenzstrasse (just around the corner from Max-Joseph-Platz); that's where the cloakroom, ticket office and audioguide booth are. The audioguide, however, does not cover the Theater.
The - reconstructed - Cuvilliés Theater is a small-scale triumph of Rococo (late Baroque), well worth a few minutes of admiration. Too bad you won't find any information on the architect or its creation, and the visit is limited to the theater floor and the entry courtyard.

Beautifully restored theatre in the heart of the royal palace Residenz. You can either visit just the theatre or get a ticket that covers the whole Residenz museum.

Nice but overrated, way overpriced little theater richly decorated by one prominent roccoco architect.
