Pros: Lovely staff, gluten- and dairy- free options available. Very nice setting. Nice touches such as a small bit of cake with your coffee. Fresh juices and coffee was pretty good. Takeaway counter available for casual drop ins. Interesting shops on ground and first floors.
Cons: Not many tbh. People were being turned away (was a Wednesday in August) due to staff shortages, so booked for the next day and no problems. If you order roast potatoes you get A LOT of them (could be a plus too) and were quite salty, so depends on your taste.
Overall: Very nice place for breakfast. Would recommend highly. Consider booking or arriving on the dot at 9am when the restaurant opens, as gets busier after 10am

Great place for breakfast! Really nice service and friendly people, food is awesome, coffee is delicious! Book in advance and prepare for spending some money, it’s quite expensive

A lovely brunch spot! We stopped for cheesecake and coffee, but everything we saw looked and smelled wonderful! Ambiance was very sleek and trendy. Staff was friendly. Favorite spot in central Hamburg!

After reading so many glowing reviews about dining at Mutterland, my expectations were obviously reasonably high. I was hungry for a hearty German breakfast and as an American, I was pleasantly surprised that Mutterland has somewhat of diner vibe going on.

The place was packed and if I were to guess, I’d say about three quarters of the patrons there were tourists.

Without much wait, a smily waitress with rosy cheeks placed me at the bar and though I much prefer sitting at restaurants and bars with my back against a wall, I figured that the service at the bar would be a bit faster than at a table. Oh boy, was I wrong.

Instead, it took an extraordinarily long time for my food to arrive (30+ minutes). And after being served a plate of oily potato slivers, ridiculous few and small slices of bacon, a runny fried egg and a small cup of tea, I was becoming increasingly skeptical about Mutterland’s aforementioned positive reviews.

Even if the place was busy, I couldn’t help feeling that Mutterland is like a small factory – not a service-focused restaurant – cashing in on a great location near Hamburg’s main train station and preying on easily impressed tourists that either don’t know how great a German dining experience normally is or are so focused on posting selfies from a “famous” eatery that they don’t give a hoot.

I recommend avoiding Mutterland. There are plenty of smaller, friendlier and more affordable breakfast places within walking distance.
