This monument stands in tribute to Edith Stein, a beautified German Catholic nun who died in Auschwitz. The beautification was not without controversy add she was sent to Auschwitz because she was born a Jew and not for her Catholic faith.
The statue depicts a sculptural ensemble of three female figures, all of them Stein, but different parts of her identities. The leaf sculpture is of Stein as a nun, walking towards a pile of discarded boots in reference to Auschwitz.
From an aesthetic point of view, it's a fine monument that tells a story with meaning and clarity. Pity the monument is well away from the main tourist circuit in Cologne.
