This corner has come to be known as the “Wurmeck” or Dragon Corner. The dragon and the scenes above it represent a legend from the time of the Plague.

It was a quiet day on the Marienplatz. Men, women and children were milling about the square -- when suddenly a dragon appeared in the sky and spread the plague to the innocent people below. Panic resulted. People ran in every direction to escape the fate of those already dead on the ground. One brave guardsman knew the fierce dragon could only be slain with a direct shot to the heart. He took careful aim with his cannon. [Boom]. As the smoke cleared, the dragon could be seen lying motionless on the cobblestone. The horrible plague had been defeated

The Wurmeck is a sculpture of a dragon located on the southwest corner of the New Town Hall of Munich. The story goes that the people of Munich began dying of the black death, when the dragon came. Eventually, the people of Munich were saved when an observant gunner killed the dragon by hitting it in it's heart with a cannon. Just above the dragon is a relief sculpture showing the people of Munich celebrating the end of the black death with the death of the dragon.

A fearsome dragon clings to a corner of Munich's city hall. A great dragon lurks above pedestrians, poised as if ready to strike terror into all who pass below. But fear not: the metal beast commemorates a monster slain by the brave people of Munich.

An interesting sculpture to find in the Old Town is that of the dragon scaling the southwest corner of Neues Rathaus at Marienplatz. This is Wurmeck, a creature of local folklore and the work of German sculptor Anton Kaindl and Hygin Kiene (1906).

What you see is a bronze dragon like creature climbing up the building facade. It is a menacing creature that according to legend brought with it the black plague to the city during the Middle Ages. Many lives where lost until heroic citizens of the city killed Wurmeck. Have a look just above the sculpture and you'll see reliefs telling this interesting story of Wurmeck.

Beautiful architecture. The plaza is very busy during the evenings so I would recommend to visiting before 11am. Enjoy!
