Propylaea - is a large stone gate with massive columns made in Greek style(with the Doric order) in 1862. One of two most powerful and monumental sights in the form of a gate that I saw in Germany and can say not only “looks strong”, but also “looks beautiful”. The second such attraction was the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. These gates look relatively funny against the backdrop of a very large and completely empty round square. Only on its sides are two interesting museums.

This propylaea (yeah, that would be a monumental gate) was erected to commemorate the ascension of Otto (son of King Ludwig I of Bavaria) to the Greek throne. Built in the style of Doric Order, there are three gates on the propylaea supported by Ionic columns. The interiors is decorated with reliefs and sculptures celebrating the crowning of King Otto and the Greek War of Independence.

Copy of the Propylaen in Athens. Monument with the names who fought for the Greek independence 1821. Ludwig I had a great love to history and his son, Otto (Othon) became king of Greece.

The Propylaea is a grand city gate structure at Königsplatz built between 1854 and 1862 by German architect, Leo von Klenze by order of King Ludwig I as a memorial to his son Otto's accession to the throne of Greece.
Interestingly, Propylaea is one of three buildings representing the three orders of ancient Greek and Roman architecture at this location. It being of the Doric order, while its counterparts, the Glyptothek of the Ionic Order and the Staatliche Antikensammlungen representing the Corinthian Order.
In the Propylaea, you find a large scale central gate entrance flanked by two block stout towers each with a smaller passage underneath. The central entrance is fronted by a row of six Doric columns and topped with a pediment with details sculptures. Extending from the pediment, are a series of reliefs engrained into the towers. They are images depicting the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire (1821-1829).
Overall, it is interesting to view the Propylaea gate at Königsplatz, give it a few minutes when you pass through. It is well worth a look-see of the Glyptothek and Staatliche Antikensammlungen buildings as well if you have interest in architecture and classical style buildings.
