We enjoyed the food, the atmosphere and the service.
However, in comparison to other authentic japan restaurants with same prices, they can do better than that.

It is an authentic Japanese restaurant that makes you feel like you are physically in Japan with its interior design, all employees speaking Japanese and they explain every little detail of the plate upon request. We sat down by the sushi bar and it was cleanest working, eating space also amazing to watch chefs closely.

We came here for the first time and it was very very nice and good.
Decent atmosphere, food was excellent, staff were very friendly and helpful.
Price was on the high end of things.
All in all, a good experience for anyone looking for good, authentic Japanese cuisine.
My only recommendation would be to somehow refresh the whole thing/concept. They are proud to be Hamburg's oldest Japanese restaurant (since 1981) and they should be!, but they don't have to keep the design and atmosphere in the 80's, as well in order to keep the title.
Like I said, the only thing I can critique is that it all just feels stiff and old.

I was surprised when reading the many reviews stating “best restaurant, best Japanese food in...” and so on. Having lived in Japan and dined in many Japanese restaurants in Europe (especially in Germany) I would rate Matsumi with three stars. This was our third visit. The food is very good, but very overpriced. This time we had the most expensive set menu at €94 per person for eight courses and did not find the quality to match the price. Many better restaurants, even in Tokyo, don’t charge that much for the quality we were served. The staff is friendly but nothing special. The restaurant itself is very basic with a cheap interior. It looks like it hasn’t been renovated for years, including the dirty restrooms. If you get seated on the tables that have a wall-mounted bench, bring a pillow! After three hours of dining without any back support but a low, wooden shelf we couldn’t wait to pay and leave. Hamburg has so many other great restaurants, and after having given Matsumi three chances we will not come back.

The restaurant is beautifully set up, the service attentive and friendly. The food is also good, lovely presentation, good quality. But, in comparison to other Japanese places we visited in Frankfurt and Düsseldorf, the food was not living up to it, which is a shame. We had such high expectations! We ordered the tasting menu for 69 Euro and left a little hungry. Agedashi tofu was sensational, Sashimi nice and fresh. The last course (fried shrimp and egg parcels and fried lotus) was really underwhelming - we would have preferred a plate of Nigiri as a finale for a multiple course meal.

The announced 2 hrs service took way over 3 hrs, with long gaps between meals. The service apologized kindly, but the gaps in between meals were just really long.

Next time we would probably just order a plate of sushi/ sashimi, I am sure that doesn't disappoint.

It’s a good place for when you want to splurge. After living more than three years in Tokyo, I’m always on the look out for some legit raw fish. Matsumi delivers an authentic taste.

Definitely a must in Hamburg! Delicious and authentic japanese food! Great ambiance, very clean reminds me of the most restaurants in Japan. Wide variety to choose from and not just offering sushi and sashimi. Will be a regular here for sure. I think the price was worth it for lunch but perhaps overpriced for evening menu. The other downside to this restaurant is the chopsticks. For the price i am paying, i would have expected proper chopsticks or at least better quality one.
