This fountain stands as a memorial and to give thanks for Dresden having been spared an outbreak of cholera that had taken hold from the River Oder and the Lower Elbe in 1841 and 1842. The fountain has Gothic tower decorated with sculptures of saints as it’s centrepiece and is most impressive as it looks like a miniature version of a tower that would adorn a major Gothic building.

Around the base of the fountain are four jugs like sculptures adorned with baby dragons spewing water from their mouths into the fountain. Ironically, the water from this fountain is not potable.

Once upon a time in 1841 and 1842, cholera raged in the city and when they got rid of it, this fountain was ordered to Zemper and financed in honor and as a gratitude for getting rid of cholera.
The fountain itself looks very beautiful and is filled with many small details that can be viewed for a long time.

I expected it to be more grandiose in dimensions, however it was still beautiful

(Translated by Google) The cholera fountain (Cholerabrunnen) is located in front of the Tashenberg Palace. Its height is 18 meters, the number of water jets is 40. It was built in the form of a church spire with Gothic elements (created according to the model of the Nuremberg Beautiful Fountain). The author of the construction project is Gottfried Semper, who also built the famous Opera House and the Art Gallery in Zwinger in Dresden.
Another name for the object is “The Fountain of Gratitude”. It was installed at the initiative of one of the townspeople captain Eugene von Gutshmid as a memory of a miraculous deliverance from the cholera epidemic. This terrible disease was rampant in 1840-1841 in Saxony, killing masses of human lives. Only Dresden happily escaped the menacing misfortune.
The fountain survived even in the bombing of 1945. Today it is one of the few buildings of the city that survived after all historical trials.

(Original)
