Peter Fechtner is the very first wall victim and the pillar is where he tried to escape. Also nearby is the Portuguese embassy where one of the first escape tunnel were dug

A small and sobering monument that should be more well-known within Berlin. Everyone should commemorate such a courageous and brave young man.

A place where you should stop for a minute and think about the times which are gone and hopefully never come back.

Sad memorial of a victim of German history

(Translated by Google) It seems so unreal to me. I still have the gray and dreary image of the inner-city border in my mind. Really, I see the pulsating, dressed-up city. And right in the middle the simple memorial column for a person who was killed in this place. Incomprehensible.

Unbegreiflich.

(Translated by Google) Visiting Berlin for the 30 years since the fall of the Wall I was in the area of u200bu200bthe famous Checkpoint "Charlie". A very interesting place if it were not for the excessive crushing and spectacle that the place has assumed over the years. Rereading my guide on the Wall, I remembered the story of Peter Fechter, told to me by my mother many years ago. Learned that there was a small monument commemorating his memory, I wanted to visit this place. Although it is only a column with some inscriptions explaining what happened and some flowers placed on the sidewalk in front, the site gave me particular emotion. This guy's story struck me so much. The fact that he risked (and unfortunately lost) his life to escape from tyranny towards freedom made me think a lot. Unfortunately the site was deserted at the time of my visit. I say "unfortunately" because people like Peter should be more remembered. It is also true that rather than becoming a "phenomenon" of business or worship, it is sometimes better to remain aware of a few. To better understand the meaning of this site, I recommend a visit to the site after having read for good what the "Berlin Wall" and the dictatorship of the GDR represented for the people who were subjugated to it.

(Translated by Google) There is a monument in memory of Peter Fechter, a young man who died while trying to escape the Berlin Wall.
Checkpoint Charlie Zimmer Straße 26-27, about a block from the checkpoint, has a memorial to him, but I felt sorry that a page of history seemed to have been erased because none of the tourists were found.
According to the story,
To him who is dying while hanging on the iron fence
No one... no one...
They did not reach out the hand of salvation.
......

The day I visited,
The contents of the memorial rain that was wet from the wet rain
It was written like this.
"Er wollte nur die Freiheit." In other words,
This young man is, above all, only, just,
I just wanted freedom.

He did not cross that barrier in 1962
1989 his soul
Standing on the collapsing barrier,
I must have shouted.
I must have sang.
Freedom...,

And the world that becomes one,
Unification!

"Er wollte nur die Freiheit."
