The Alter Hof is the historical residences of various rulers of Bavaria over the centuries, especially the members of the House of Wittelsbach. Like much of the old town, it was restored to the late gothic architecture after being destroyed in World War II. I found that the two storey bay window, again in the gothic style to be the most attractive feature of the courtyard.

Beautifully renovated and free small museum downstairs in the information centre. Highly recommended as it explains the history of Munich as a city. Takes only 30 minutes and worth it.

It's great, it contains a free info point inside where you can get info prospects for pretty much everything in and near Munchen. Go down to basement and you can also watch a free presentation about the history of Munchen from 1150 to 1920 that very well put together, interesting and informative (has an English version - there a button on the right side wall in the projection room to start the ENG version).
It also contains a free but well taken care of restroom.
Overall, if you are tourist in Munchen this is a great place to get a lot of historical info for free while sitting in the basement of one of the oldest buildings in town.
