The Goldener Hecht restaurant is located right across from the end of the old bridge in Heidelberg, and though we ate inside on a freezing winter day, I can imagine it would be very nice to sit outside in the plaza with a nice local beer and some schnitzel in the summer as well.
We started with some of the local beer which was very good, and naturally complimented the meat of our meals. I've never had a bad beer in Germany, and the trend continued at Goldener Hecht.
My wife ordered the herrengoulash and really enjoyed it, though could hardly finish it because the portion was so generous. I had a stuffed pork dish which was very good as well. The meat was cooked perfectly and the sauce went very well. Apparently the menu is Austrian themed, but we just noticed the wide variety of delicious cooked meat dishes.
We also tried the applestreudel which was covered in vanilla ice cream and delicious.
The atmosphere is typical German, with dark wood everywhere, though we were lucky to sit next to the traditional stove which was nice on such a cold day.
Service was good. It started off a bit cold but warmed up as we stayed. By the time we left, they offered us a complimentary shot of schnapes for each of us.
Great experience. Definitely worth a visit when in Heidelberg.
