This fountain stands in tribute to Hans Hummel, a Hamburg water carrier who lived during the 18th and 19th century. While an ordinary person carrying out an important, but fairly low status job, he became famous for his retort to being teased, a phrase that roughly translates as "kiss my behind".

It's fountain has a sculpture as it's centrepiece showing Hummel carrying buckets of water while adults and children are teasing him. Not a must see, especially as it's well off the main tourist circuit in Hamburg. A cute story nevertheless, +1 for a tribute to an ordinary person doing an important job.

(Translated by Google) The Hummelbrunnen, created by the sculptor Richard Kuöhl, is a real eye-catcher and hidden gem in Hamburg's Neustadt district. The monument shows the famous water carrier with a grim look and surrounded by a mocking crowd of children. At the corner of the house, the Breiter Gang / Rademachergang, a small child's figure shows her bare rear. She holds it out towards a water-carrier figure, the Hummel monument opposite. The scene alludes to a Hamburg greeting: "Hummel, Hummel!" follows "Mors, Mors!". With this perfectly coordinated ensemble, the history of the Hamburg original was perfectly taken into account.
