The funniest part of this fountain is that Ms. Rauscher spits water onto the street during the summer months. Then, is the time to stand on the side and watch innocent bypassers get wet. ????

It started with a staunch fascination for apple wine. Back in the early 19th century, there lived a homeless German lady who roamed around Old Sachsenhausen in Frankfurt and stole apple wine from unsuspecting guests of cider pubs in the locality. She was called Frau Rauscher (Rauscher in German means sweet cider). She was usually drunk and known for her outlandish behaviour of spitting at patrons who accosted her for stealing their drink. Such was her notoriety that she soon became part of the popular folklore. There’s a famous German song attributed to her. Possman’s, one of the largest manufacturers of apple wine in Frankfurt, immortialised her by naming an apple wine after her. But the best tribute Frau Rauscher ever received was this spitting statue of her in Klappergasse. The inscription near the statue, translated into English, reads: “The market woman from the Klappergasse has a bump on her head. Whether that comes from drinking alcohol or by her husband, the police will clarify.” I could not get the clarification but was glad enough to meet this greatest patron of apple wine.

A fountain with a funny story. You would miss it if you weren't looking for it and there are far nicer and more important fountains in Frankfurt.
