I’d recommend at least one day in Dresden. Also stay in a hotel in SchlossPlatz. Totally worth the money.

Schloßplatz is a small but scenic square in Dresden situated on the south side of the Elbe River at the Augustbrucke. Sadly the square was mostly destroyed during the WWII Bombing of Dresden. However, it has been restored to resemble the 15th century setting and historical atmosphere of the square.

Here you can see an impressive monument to Friedrich August, in front of Oberlandesgericht Dresden building facing Kaholische Hofkirche (Dresden Cathedral). There are other nice monuments nearby, including the 'Nacht' Monument upon the steps leaning to the Bruhl Terrace, at Schloßplatz.

You can also have a look for the peculiar paved stone with the letter 'N' near the cathedral. This is where Napoleon Bonaparte started to parade his troops after the battle of Dresden in 1813. Additionally, you will find fine architecture in the buildings that surround Schloßplatz. These include Kaholische Hofkirche, The Neo-classical Georgenbau and the Royal Palace in the backdrop.

There are many nice photography opportunities of the monuments and buildings situated at Schloßplatz. It's worth passing by and spending a few minutes to enjoy what you see here before continuing onward with your sightseeing endeavours in the city centre of Dresden.

You can walk and walk around the old town. . . admire the buildings, stay in one of the crowded restaurants and cafes, drive a horse-drawn carriage, or walk along the Elbe River and admire the coast.

This is the royal square of Dresden, where the Dresden’s Royal Palace is situated. The oldest building in Dresden, the castle was the residence of Saxony’s electors and kings. Like a lot of palaces in Europe, the original started small with new rulers erecting “extensions” and launching “home improvement” projects that resulted in various architectural styles employed to the castle over the years. Perhaps the most well known was Augustus II the Strong who became the King of Poland as well as Elector of Saxony by converting to Catholicism, a big controversy since Saxony was the heart of the Protestant movement. His son, Augustus III built the Hofkirche Catholic Church next to the Royal Palace. Within it lies the heart of King Augustus the Strong and only his heart because the rest of Augustus lies in Poland where he was also king.

The well-place to enjoy the firework at the last night of the city festival.
