The slim Mathilde is much more than a historical lantern with a four-sided clock on the central market square in Dortmund Hörde. At the same time, it represents the long history of a city that was incorporated into Dortmund and the future of the district that has undergone the most visible structural change in the Ruhr area in the last 20 years.
The cast iron clock was manufactured and rebuilt in 1983 by the training workshop “Phoenix” of Hoesch Hüttenwerke AG based on the historical model.
It has had its name since the inauguration of the original watch in 1908. When the mayor at the time stepped up to the inauguration, he was accompanied by his not-so-slim wife Mathilde. The citizens of Hörder could not resist the comparison between the mayor's wife and the, in contrast to her, “slim” watch and henceforth called the watch “Slim Mathilde”, much to the mayor's annoyance.
Even today, the landmark of Hörde has an important function as a meeting point and starting point for many experiences in Hörde. Due to its central location, right next to the exit of the subway station, it is perfect for finding and meeting each other.
