A bit off the beaten track in a quiet residential-looking area of Cologne the Grünlilie (spelled in German with the umlaut and meaning “green lily”) is one of the few restaurants that we return to again and again. We’ve gotten to know Elke and Angelo, who run the restaurant and make us and all the many other regular guests feel as if we were eating at home – if we remember to reserve in advance since the small cozy restaurant is often booked.
The open kitchen easily visible from the small dining area is light and airy with huge windows that look out onto a green park-like expanse. Elke's and Anglelo’s wonderful attention to detail is both visible – various exhibitions of artwork and beautiful romantic lighting in the evenings – and of course edible – organic vegetarian cuisine at its best: superbly crisp vegetables fresh from the market prepared in a multitude of ways. My husband’s favorite is the fried potatoes and mushroom plate. I always try something new on the seasonal menu. The portions are generous so we usually share the delicious soup of the day to make sure we have room for one of the fresh desserts, also freshly made and just sweet enough for us.
In addition to the high quality organic wine, we also enjoy the various fresh fruit and vegetable juice combinations offered with seasonal variations.
Eating healthy has never tasted better, and an evening at the Grunlilie is always for us a very special treat.
