Best grocery in Berlin - I am a visitor from California used to the incredible Berkeley Bowl and Rainbow Grocers and the many wonderful co-ops and organic grocery stores we have in the SF Bay. After visiting Berlin many times and shopping in many different bio-shops around the city (especially the Lichtenberg and Friedrichshain areas), Wurzelwerk is BY FAR the best grocery of all. There is the excellent selection -everything I need and none of the excess and bloat and advertising more expensive shops and commercial organic grocers push. Then there is the incredible staff - warm, friendly, with ethical values and really caring about food and customers. I don't speak any German but I have never, ever encountered any frustration or impatience when I ask for any help - quite the contrary, I am met with relaxed interest and effort to help, they take their time to really do a good job helping me find what I need, order it, or even learn about it (I was talking with one staff about why they should consider to carry nutritional yeast with B-12 added, for vegans). Wurzelwerk t is a co-op and I am happy to support these deserving workers and know my money is not going to a profit scheme. There is a real community and social change feel to the shop with many local organic peace environment and justice efforts being supported. The relaxed and kind atmosphere is immediately apparent whenever I arrive - nobody likes the chore and errand of shopping but I am lucky to live right around the corner and Wurzelwerk makes shopping easy and stress free, even the lighting in the shop is mild and not like the harsh fluorescent light you get in most stores. My friend and I love Wurzelwerk, she is a member and I would certainly be too if I spent more time in Berlin. I really encourage you to check it out, even if you live a little farther away and it's not the nearest bio-shop, because Wurzelwerk is so worth it.
