For a book lover and reader, this place is the least wanted place to be standing. This is where, more than 20,000 books were burned down to chock the free flow of knowledge. The empty book shelves reminds us of that day, everyday.

The infamous Bebelplatz, where the notorious National Socialists or "Nazis" burnt 20,000 books remains fresh as a horror to the literate world.

The spot where the books were burnt, right in front of the Law-Department of Humboldt University, has been preserved with an underground memorial with shelves, having no books in them - a clear indication of that day of horror.

Don’t miss this subtle memorial, The Empty Library. “That was but a prelude; where they burn books, they will ultimately burn people as well.” quote from German-Jewish author Heinrich Heine's play Almansor (1820).

I would always recommend to take a free walking tour, you have a LOT of them and they're pretty good in general, besides there's so much to see and understand, It's better if someone qualified explains it to you. I used the "civitatis" app to book them and it worked wonders for me!

I'd seen pictures of this so knew what to expect. The idea is great, but the glass panel through which you look through is so badly scratched by people walking over it that you can't remember see much. Hence the low rating
