We have a very mixed review of this hostel. We stayed for 3 weeks visiting family. First of all the staff and cleaning staff were super friendly and so understanding. We all picked up a tummy bug from a family member and the cleaning staff were super understanding and happy to help us.
The location was amazing - the main cross country trains, and the intercity trains (s-bahn u0026 u-bahn) leave on the other side of the mall, and as the mall is open until 9pm, I felt fairly safe catching public transport alone at night with my two young boys in tow. The tram is 900m away and also easy to access. The mall has lots of great food and shopping.
The room we got was different to what we imagined and we ended up with 3x bunk beds which actually worked out though it was weird not sleeping next to my husband. We had no other guests booked into our room and we had a shower and bathroom for our family. The rooms were clean-ish though I could tell that the cleaners must have a timeframe to do their work in because they weren't able to spend much time on each room. The room really could have done with a good floor-ceiling clean as there were marks all over the walls. And while the sheets and covers were sent out for commercial cleaning, I suspect the blanket inners and pillows aren't because they were dirty and we were horrifically bitten by bedbugs. The bedding also often had rips and holes in it, which the little fingers of my children seemed to find their way into. I also woke up with a sore back every morning due to the poor mattress quality.
When the hostel was quiet, buffet breakfast was at the hotel next door and was delicious and had very good options. It cost us €11.90 each however my two young children ate for free. The only downside was we couldn't charge it to our room and we had to pay every day. But it was worth it.
The biggest downside was there were no kitchen facilities so there was no way to make a tea or coffee or heat something for my kids to eat. Not having access to a kitchen was super disappointing and very inconvenient especially when you have jetlag and your kids are up at 4am before breakfast is ready and they are hungry. Unfortunately this meant we had to break the "no food in the room" rule, however you can't have it both ways; either it's no food in the room and you provide communal services e.g. fridge and tea/coffee facilities, or those a provided in the room and no communal area. So this really needs to be rethought.
Would I stay here again? Not unless I was desperate due to the bedding situation and no kitchen facilities. With two young children I don't have time for poor mattresses and poor nights sleep and I need to be able to feed my kids. I also had to wash all our clothing when we got home to NZ to make sure the bedbugs didnt travel with us.
