There are many statues scattered around the historic city centre of Nuremburg including the Albrecht Dürer Monument at Albrecht-Duerer-Platz and Bergstraße.
This monument is the work of German sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch and was unveiled at this location in 1840. At that time, the square was a milk market.
Albrecht Dürer was born in Nuremburg, lived here for numerous years and executed many of his famous works within the city. He is considered one of German's most important historical artists and his works are now found in important art museums and galleries around the western world.
The bronze statue you see here reminds of his famous self portrait. Albrecht stands in a proud manner, much detail being applied to his face and flowing robes. The statue stands upon a simple stone pedestal with the artist's name.
It is good monument of Dürer, one worth seeking out for a brief viewing before or after visiting the well preserved and restored Albrecht Durer House around 5 minutes walk from this location.
