The square is named after the Frisian missionary Liudger, considered the founder of the city. It stands on the site of the old Ludgeritor, a tower gate that stood in the city's fortifications between the late 12th century and 1785. The gate got its name because the church of St. Ludgeri, which still exists today, is located in the interior of the city fortifications in the immediate vicinity. In addition, it was protected by a roundabout until 1654. Since it was damaged by a landslide in 1652, it became a larger bastion after 1654, replaced. The remains of this defense system were discovered during renovation works in 2008. In 1876, the old fortification in front of the city gate was turned into a green area. The road is documented in the 1880s as unchanged from approx. Since 1936 there has been a roundabout at this point as a major traffic junction.
