Richard Strauss Fountain

I came across the Richard Strauss Fountain just in front of the Alte Akademie on Neuhauserstrasse, one of the main shopping streets in Munich. The fountain was created in honour of the composer, Richard Strauss.

The fountain consists of a bowl atop a 6 meter high bronze column. Around the column is base relief sculptures of scenes inspired by the Strasse's opera, Salome. Water falls from the bowl in different directions, creating an illusion of a wet veil alluding to the final dance in the opera called the Dance of the Seven Veils.

An interesting monument to see along Neuhauser Straße near St. Michael's Church is Richard-Strauss Brunnen (fountain) which was constructed here in 1962 by German sculptor Hans Wimmer as tribute to the musical composer and son of Munich.

What you will see here is a ornamental pillar with scenes from Strauss's opera Salome. The pillar is topped by a small basin from which water spills down into a pool from which the pillar stands. The pool is slightly below ground level.

Note that the location of the Strauss Fountain is significant in that it is directly across the street from the his birthplace in 1864.

This is an interesting fountain structure that is worth seeking out while you explore the Ol Town. It is conveniently located so give it a few minutes when walking along popular Neuhauser Straße.

Nice fountain, my baby love playing around, unfortunately the water is so dirty and I can't allow her to play with it, the fountain is a center for the birds so my baby enjoys it a lot

Food and drinks are excellent but the place is small and crowded. Service need to be improved.

Passed by it but it looked more like a column than a fountain since it wasn't on.
