Astonishing historic landmark, a representative hotspot in Munich. I totally recommend to go see it if you have the chance to visit the city.
I downrate it because it was a real challenge to find a toilet or a place to sit and rest anywhere else besides the coffee shops in the area. During the Corona times it was fully packed, a real challenge to go through the crowd.
Be advised, the prices in the area are really high.

One of the many interesting things to see at Marienplatz is Mariensäule (Column of the Virgin) which was erected in 1638 at the end of the Thirty Years' War. This is a beautiful monument that is nice to see when spending time on the square.
Here you will find a single column topped with a gilded figure of the Virgin Mary which was created by Hubert Gerhard in 1593. The column plinth is surrounded by four delightful putti which represent the overcoming of hunger, war, plague and heresy.
The Mariensäule stands just before Glockenspiel and makes for nice photographs with Neues Rathaus in the background. Given the column monument a few minutes to enjoy and make sure so have a quick look at the fountain monuments around Marienplatz as well.

Quite an interesting column in the middle of Marienplatz. I was blown away from the New Town Hall so this was a bit underwhelming comparatively. It was also a bit hard to appreciate it with stalls being deconstructed all around us since they were packing up the Christmas market.
The golden statue on top was beautiful as were the angels on the base. I imagine it would be more central in a flat plaza with no stalls all around.

Mariensaeule is an example of a religious monuments depicting Virgin Mary on the top of a column. While the purpose of the Holy Trinity columns is usually to celebrate the Christian faith, this was built in in 1638 to mark the end of Swedish occupation during the Thirty Years' War.
The golden statue depicts Mary standing on a crescent moon as the Queen of Heaven. In her left arm she holds the infant Jesus and on the right, she holds a sceptre raised and pointing to heaven. The column is low enough that you can get a really good view of the statue.
