Most likely one of the best maintained historical gates within Munich. There was a display of the gate's historical past while I was there, with paintings and pictures ranging all the way back to 1337. Wonderful to see.

Cool to be able to see a party of history, but the area around it seems to degrade it, as well as lots of graffiti.

The church is beautiful and impressing, there are nice food places nearby.

We stopped by just after Christmas and there were stalls inside the gate. It looked like you were able to head up the towers to a restaurant but we just passed through around the bottom. There was a stall in the middle for drinks and then a stall around the end for food. It wasn't very big but I really liked the atmosphere, particularly in the middle of the gate.
From afar it looked really nice with the colourful mural in the middle connecting two of the outer towers. It almost looked like a castle wall. We bussed up from the English garden but was just down the road from the Marienplatz so it is fairly central.

Isartor is the easter-most of the three remaining gothic town gates of medieval Munich. The gate first consisted of a 40-meter-high (130 ft) main gate tower. The gate is massive and consists of the gate tower, two flanking side towers were later additions to as barbican. The Isartor also houses a museum dedicated to the comedian and actor Karl Valentin, but I didn't visit that.

It's a an impressive structure and worth a 10 minute walk from Marienplatz

Isartor is one of the four city gates that formed part of the medieval fortifications around the city. It was originally constructed around the end of the 13th century. However what you see today is a reconstruction of the 1830s version of the city gate, which was badly damaged during WWII. Isartor is where visitors would enter Munich from the east.

What you find here is a large centre tower linked by two smaller, eight-sided towers by walls with entrances for pedestrians. There is another wall connecting the two smaller towers. This wall includes a nicely restored fresco depicting Emperor Ludwig's triumphal procession after the Battle of Ampfing (1322). You can see the fresco up close from right outside the building. However, we found it easier to take pictures, capturing the three towers as well by crossing the street.

Isartor is also the location of the Valentin-Karlstadt Museum. We didn't have time to visit the museum however we did enjoy walking around the viewing Isartor. This is a nicely restored City Gate worth spending a few minutes to see.
