The staff were nice and it was a cute little place to sit in.
However, to be completely honest it was a very disappointing visit after all the good reviews here and the impressive pictures.
The hot drinks were ok and the cupcakes were just average at best. We tried a few flavours and both of us wondered if they have ever even tried cupcakes abroad??? Or bought a reputable recipe book from the US or U.K. to learn before developing their own??
The flavours sounded great but the ones we tried were disappointing in terms of taste. The red velvet is a classic cupcake and they completely missed the mark with it - their cream cheese icing is dense, fatty and lacks much flavour. It should be light, sweet, but with the recognisable tang from the cream cheese. (Not sure if it’s their recipe or if they just don’t whip the icing long enough?) Sponge is always light in flavour with red velvet but this was just bland.
We were also quite disappointed with the Schwarzwälder cupcake - nice dark chocolate sponge though, but just one actually cherry on top of the whipped cream topping and perhaps a tiny bit of syrup in one tiny part? The way they’ve made it didn’t remind you of a Black Forest cake at all!
Germans do certainly seem to like baked goods which are on average less sweet, so perhaps that accounts for how popular they seem to be and explains why they’ve chosen to make cupcakes like this?
If you’ve had cupcakes from anywhere like sprinkles or the hummingbird bakery, just avoid the disappointment of spending money on these.
Their bakery and shop is a brilliant concept, even the flavour selection sounds great, just a huge shame they aren’t authentic and the quality is not as expected.
If we do go back we will carefully consider which different flavours we would try - it’s completely possible we didn’t pick the ones which are their “best” but usually the classic flavours should be a reliable choice.
