Short version
They should change their name to “Sphincter Döner”. I’m writing this review from my toilet.
Long version
Don’t go here on a hot summer day before closing time. For all their rules, Germany doesn’t seem to be very strict about enforcing food safety in its restaurants. At a Döner joint such as this one, you will often see chopped vegetables in large heaps which cannot be cooled effectively.
Today, the chopped tomatoes at Sphinx looked like they had been sitting in the heat most of the day. This place has no AC. It’s hot in there! The front door is propped open. The refrigeration can’t keep up. And yet, against my better judgement, I accepted those tomatoes with my Kebap. They tasted… wrong. Foul. Exactly what one would expect under the circumstances.
So I just picked the tomatoes out and ate the meat. But it was already too late. I ate enough of the foul things that on my way home I could feel sharp pains in my stomach.
And now I’m spending the rest of my evening on the toilet.
I might go here on another day when it’s not too warm. But, to be honest, if they don’t understand basic principles of food safety — or they don’t care — should I ever go back? 2 stars while I ponder that question. In any case, I’ve learned my lesson: listening to my gut can save my gut.
