We decided to have a late lunch and called to make sure we could get a table. The Italian lady on the phone was cold and matter-of-fact, stating we wouldn’t need a reservation.
We came by about an hour later and were greeted in the same cold way (probably the same woman). We got a nice table and reviewed the menu. A young Italian waiter in jeans and a casual shirt (he looked very ungroomed) gave us menus and brought water and bread (which isn’t complimentary). After reviewing the menu, which is fairly extensive, we decided to order. The same male waiter started laughing when we ordered. When we asked why he just said “nothing”. It made us feel very uncomfortable and uneasy. This was a first experience.
The food took fairly long to arrive. We received an amuse bouche which was nothing special - bell pepper pieces with pesto (we guess, as the waiter didn’t say). The minestrone soup exceeded our expectations - it was rich and stuffed with vegetables. The beef tartare was not good. The meat had a pungent smell and tasted sour. We strongly advise not to order it.
As main courses we tried the raviolacci di ossobuco and the spaghettoni tartufo with anchovies. We were nervous about the truffles and anchovies combination, thinking the anchovies would overpower the truffles - and we were right. The dish tasted salty anchovies and the truffle flavor was hard to find. The raviolacci was good. As dessert we tried the tiramisu and it was bland and very basic.
Gallo Nero displays Michelin plaques by the entrance. We find it very hard to believe that this restaurant would be given a single Michelin star. Having dined at Quadri in Venice, or Ivigneri in Hamburg, we would say that our experience was very far from a first class dining experience. From the arrogant staff on the phone and in person, to the presentation of the food, and the odd flavors, this restaurant is nowhere near a prime dining experience.
The only reason we rated Gallo Nero three stars instead of two was thanks to the friendly waiter who came at the end of our meal… a Spaniard, from the canary islands… he was friendly, happy, and witty.
Maybe Gallo Nero should consider employing people with his character and mindset instead.
We will not come back to Gallo Nero.
Ambience: 5/5 (the restaurant has a nice interior, and very nice bathrooms)
Staff: 1/5 (except the Canary Island gentleman, 5/5)
Food: 2/5
Price: 2/5 (the dishes can be overpriced, like the truffles/anchovies spaghettoni, or the the drinks).

We were there three times this year. The food is good, but the service is not to the standards. This was the case already on our second visit, but we still gave the restaurant another chance. It was a mistake. Last time, we waited over an hour for our food. I had to asked twice for it, to the waiter, who gave no explanation and insinuated I was impatient. When we eventually got served, no apologies where given and the waiter even said "see? I told you it was coming". Despite this, they repeatedly forgot about our table, having similar issues when ordering drinks and the dessert. Again, no explanation or apologies. Overall, it was not an enjoyable evening. Given the (increased) prices and the standards of the restaurant, the least it is to be treated well. Now, it is hard to recommend going here.

First time visit after COVID. Gallo Nero is driving prices up dramatically, a glass of wine now is EUR 14,50, they are now charging EUR 2,95 for the bread before the meal. Service was slow, wrong dish served without apology. Quality of food was ok, not outstanding. Bye bye ????

Absolutely delicious everything from the bread, to the appetizers platter, to the steak ????. Ingredients from Italy, amazing sea salt with orange flavour. Great atmosphere and vinoteca design, outstanding service, Italian radio and music. You are really being emerged into a piece of Bella Italia. Have not tried the wines and desserts yet, but I am going back for sure.

One of the best restaurants in town! The Gallo Nero is piece of Italy in Hamburg and a home that they share with all guests. Their goal is to create moments of happiness in this special place. Even this restaurant isn't in the heart of the city this part "Eppendorf" is so beautiful and has many great houses with beautiful architecture, really beautiful and inspiring streets.

Special recommendation is to try their special oil, because that oil is actually homemade by them and the taste is just remarkable. I have visited this restaurant a few times and they have really delicious food.
__
Prices are $$-$$$ - This part of the city is the "rich" part so don't be surprised by the prices. It's really worth visiting. The waiters were very kind and very professional.

Center and their pride is the new kitchen of Gallo Nero. The Cucina was previously in the Beletage above the restoraunt and was connected by a historic food lift, it is now on the ground floor. What's more, our guests can watch chefs Andrea, Martin and Davide and their colleagues cooking through the large, glassy doors and admire their professional, concentrated work.

Food was OK, service is good.
Unfortunately the prices are not worth it.
Waiter served the wrong wine in my glass (white whereas there was still red inside) so both were wasted and I didn't even have a glass to compensate whereas our total bill was over 500€
Desserts are very beautiful and tasty.
