The city wall of Cologne was a fortification built in several stages of construction over centuries. The first was created between the late 1st and 3rd centuries for the square "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium" of the Romans. A more spacious, semi-circular fortification line was built in the Middle Ages. The last development was the fortress ring of the Prussian period from 1815, while the medieval wall was laid down from 1881 to small remnants.
The chronology and history of the first ancient city of Cologne fortification is uncertain. Tacitus mentions fortifications for the first century AD. The construction and expansion of these facilities are unknown.
