I live in Berlin for 11 years and I have to say - the setup of the station, especially if you need to transfer to get to the airport is an example of the poorest engineering I have ever seen. Whoever had the brilliant idea to put additional tracks going to the airport without any way to see the train schedule was an idiot.

Apparently this over-budget monster was 'completed' a few years back, though the south entrance with it's graffitied walls and piles of rubble is still very provisional looking and I suspect always will be. Why isn't there a screen in the main hall listing all departures? That's standard, isn't it? Why is the signage to platforms 13/14 (for the FEX airport train) so abysmally awful that pretty much everyone has to ask passers-by where they are? Plenty of shops and food places though.

Crowded and dirty. Train service is totally unreliable, even they don't announce the service disruptions correctly.

For a main station, this one is pretty good. There is a mcdonalds, a card shop, a backwerk and maybe a couple of other places to get food. Once you know your way around, it's not too hard to navigate, although you can't trust people standing on the escalators as indicators of whether the train you all need is arriving.

Was ist das??!! An astounding example of German INNEFFICENCY!! I forgot my glassess which made it impossible to read any of the signs, however even when I zoomed in on them with my phone they still made no sense. You have to go up and down constantly to change platforms. Next time I will pack in a backpack as it was a real nightamre with my suitcase. Its a pity as backpacks arent really my style but Ostkreuz is leaving me no other choice. Avoid!!!!
