This square is a unique spot for the nostalgic people of the DDR times. The statue is quiet big and it represents Ernst Thälmann, not Lenin, as some people think the first time they see it. You can still see the comunist symbol looking on the top left of the monument.

This memorial to politician and firebrand Ernst Thalmann is an example of "kolossalstatue", created in concrete, stone and bronze, depicting Ernst with raised fist, saluting the "red front fighters union". The entire bronze production quotum was used up for the creation of this monument. The sculpture was created by Lew Kerbel, a Soviet artist, causing stress among German artists, because there were enough DDR based artists capable to take up the job. The monument was placed under protection of the law after threats of demolition were expressed. Nice monument, impressive, needs some serious maintenance and deep cleaning though.

If you are looking for a Soviet era Berlin monuments, this one is the most impressive, second only to Treptower park war memorial, a must see if you are exploring East Berlin.

Historically significant but there is no explanation or context. Apart from that ugly and dirty.
