We stayed at the City Hotel in Oberhausen for 3 nights last year in October.
Prior to entering the building, we had followed the hotel's website's instructions and attempted to locate the guest parking. Despite driving a normal-sized Skoda Octavia, we had been unable to reach the parking because the alley at the back was so small that it would have left scratches on both sides of the car. We elected to leave the car in a side-street, after buying a parking ticket. The entrance to the "guest parking" can be seen in the photo carousel on the website. It is in fact smaller than it looks. Fine if you're driving a moped or a Smart, but impossible if you're driving a car.
We then entered the hotel, an experience that was something out of a Twin Peaks episode. We got the distinct feeling that we were interrupting the otherwise occupied owner/receptionist (in the yellow striped jumper on the hotel's website) whilst he was making a private call on his mobile. After waiting a few minutes, we submitted the details of our reservation and inquired about the parking problem. He answered "haben sie Führerschein?" in a very sarcastic tone ("Do you not have a driver's license?") that made both my partner and I feel quite insulted. Not a particularly good way of "breaking the ice". Because we were unable to benefit from the parking, as will be the case for most guests, we ended up buying a large number of parking tickets during our stay.
Whilst I usually offer to pay up front, I didn't even have time to suggest payment as the manager's hand lashed forth and cash was demanded on arrival. This went a few more steps to make us feel even more uncomfortable.
Now the room: It was in itself barely adequate, but the house-keeping team (or perhaps the grumpy manager) had left a little surprise... a quarter-full bottle of Vodka on top of one of the shelves. We did not touch it.
A few minor things:
- Dust, dust and more dust. Behind and by the night tables, under the bed. The "main avenues" had been cleaned, but the rest had clearly not seen a duster or a vacuum cleaner in quite some time.
- Some people say that the sound of a running waterfall will help them sleep. Sadly, that is not the case with leaky toilets.
- The window of our ground-floor room had clearly in the past been smashed or vandalised and was taped-up. It is was not very comforting to see how "seriously" the hotel team takes security.
After 2 nights in this rather quaint environment, we decided we'd had enough and left 1 night early. The hotel manager's son seemed happy to cash in and I'm sure that they rented the room soon after.
I would certainly not recommend this experience to others.
The one redeeming factor? Just down the road is Whisky Hort, a great little whisky shop that is well worth visiting. I would however recommend staying at a better hotel.
