I arrived at 8 minutes past 8. The reception was unmanned, with a note saying to call a number. Since my phone has a low-cost sim, from which it is very expensive to call German numbers, I used the phone at the reception to call the number. "Invalid number". A man then appeared from behind, with a very hostile demeanour, u0026 told me that this was the phone number for the phone I was calling from – even though there was no-one there to answer it anyway, the staff were just in the back room u0026 were using the phone as a shopbell. He then asked me why I was behind the counter. I tried explaining to him that it was because it is very expensive for me to call German numbers over my low-cost sim, but he wouldn't have it u0026 kept rephrasing the question, then told me that I had to "go outside" because there were no beds available, without even bothering to check the system – evidently he had taken a disliking to me u0026 was just trying to get rid of me. Out of frustration at the sheer loathsomeness of the man, I slammed my hand down on the hand sanitiser dispenser. This caused him to apparently change his mind, u0026 asked me to fill out the Meldeschein. Mistrusting of him, I asked if he was actually offering me accommodation, but he told me to "just fill out this form", then let the cat out of the bag in saying "and the police are coming because we don't accept bulls*** like this". Bavarian police, if you wish to ask me for a statement, look no further.
This matters because a hostel is a place where people come who are willing to sacrifice some personal territory in order to save money, so if the staff treat you like you've broken into their dwelling with malicious intent if you so much as go behind the front desk, it betrays an "us u0026 them" mentality on the part of said staff.
You shouldn't stay at a hostel – a place intended for people trying to save money – where the staff ask you to spend your phone credit summoning them because they can't be bothered to go u0026 get a doorbell.
This is one of the few bad apples of the German Youth Hostel Association, where staff are aloof towards guests.
