Unfortunately with Maps there is no way to describe a city as a whole to convey a mood.

We were on Ascension Day in Kassel and the surrounding area. The highlight in Kassel was definitely the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the trick fountains on Hercules.
We were there on Thursday for the water games, Friday in Hann. Münden and on Saturday in the city of Kassel.

In preparation, I looked at the website of the tourism information on the Internet. That was done very neatly, quite clearly, but also not very meaningful.
There is even a Kassel Card. Great. But you can neither order them online nor buy them. No joke!
I then called because I couldn't really believe it, but unfortunately the (very friendly) lady on the phone had to confirm it.
So you have to go to one of the two sales outlets during opening hours to have this Kassel-Card handed over to you as a printout. Unfortunately, the journey there by public transport, which would be free with the Kassel Card, is not yet included.

Unfortunately, the city itself makes a neglected impression. Dirty, the few exhibited art objects from past "documentation" are also slowly rotting around in the area.
Cafes, churches, shops, the market hall etc. were either closed, affected by repairs, sold out or otherwise not to be experienced. Even the trendy "Neuer Westen" district didn't have much to offer that was really inspiring and was rather tedious.

Rarely have we had the feeling in a city that those responsible are resting completely on the laurels of an event that then only takes place every 4 years. The rest doesn't seem to matter to anyone.
It's just stupid when there's a scandal there of all places... The fact that no one in the city noticed it before fits in perfectly with our image of Kassel. Too bad.

Conclusion:
The Orangery Palace in the Karlsaue and the Aue itself are certainly beautiful. Perhaps the Grimm World, otherwise it is enough to visit the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel.
There are still a few nice destinations in the area, such as Hann. Münden, Fritzlar or the Edersee.

Wir waren über Himmelfahrt in Kassel und Umgebung unterwegs. Höhepunkt in Kassel war auf jeden Fall der Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe (UNESCO Welterbe) und die Wasserspiele am Herkules.
Dort waren wir am Donnerstag eben zu den Wasserspielen, Freitag in Hann. Münden und am Samstag in der Stadt Kassel.

Zur Vorbereitung habe ich mir die Internetseite der Tourismus-Information im Internet angesehen. Das war ganz ordentlich gemacht, recht übersichtlich, aber auch wenig aussagefähig.
Es gibt sogar eine Kassel-Card. Toll. Die kann man aber weder online Bestellen, noch kaufen. Kein Witz!
Ich habe dann angerufen, weil ich das nicht so recht glauben konnte, aber die (sehr freundliche) Dame am Telefon hat mir das leider bestätigen müssen.
Man muss also eine der beiden Verkaufsstellen während der Öffnungszeiten aufsuchen, um sich diese Kassel-Card ausgedruckt überreichen zu lassen. Die Fahrt dorthin mit dem ÖPNV, der mit der Kassel-Card kostenfrei wäre, ist dann leider noch nicht enthalten.

Die Stadt selbst macht leider einen ungepflegten Eindruck. Schmutzig, den paar ausgestellten Kunstobjekte von vergangenen "dokumenta" stehen auch langsam vor sich hin gammelnd in der Gegend herum.
Cafés, Kirchen, Geschäfte, die Markthalle etc. waren entweder geschlossen, durch Reparaturen beeinträchtigt, ausverkauft oder sonst irgendwie nicht zu erleben. Selbst das In-Viertel "Neuer Westen" hatte nicht viel wirklich inspirierendes zu bieten und war eher ermüdend.

Selten hatten wir in einer Stadt das Gefühl, dass sich die Verantwortlichen vor allem auf den Ruf eines Ereignisses komplett ausruhen, das dann aber nur alle 4 Jahre stattfindet. Der Rest scheint allen egal.
Blöd nur, wenn es ausgerechnet dort einen Skandal gibt... Dass es bei der Stadt vorher niemand gemerkt hat, passt komplett in unser Bild von Kassel. Schade.

Fazit:
Schön ist sicher das Orangerieschloß in der Karlsaue und die Aue selbst. Vielleicht noch die Grimm-Welt, ansonsten reicht es in Kassel, den Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe zu besichtigen.
Im Umfeld gibt es noch ein paar schöne Ziele, wie Hann. Münden, Fritzlar oder den Edersee.
