It was a very worthwhile exhibition of major impressionists, Renoir, Monet, Gauguin, and numerous other period artists. Good downloadable audio tour available for free. The exhibition is based on the private collections of two late 19th century industrialists and art collectors, one German, one Japanese. Pre-booking tickets are required.

Disorder and lack of coherent display of artworks.
The spaces of this museum are actually huge, but they are not rationally exploited:
The managers have tried to mix in the same room , for example, an ancient Egyptian statue next to the expressionism artworks : There is no clear meaning in doing this . The visitors have no chance to understand where is the logical or historical link between ancien Egypt statuary and Expressionismus. This is just one of the many examples I collected during my visit.
Nolde is in one room, then in another and moreover in another. But there is no Leitmotiv in such a display , no chronology and no link among artworks.
Frankly it gives the impression of visiting a storeroom.
Folkwang in the past was better placed when organising an exhibition on ONE artist or on ONE mainstream school of artists.
But its permanent collection, albeit on rotation of artworks, has deceived me beyond any expectations.
We are however grateful for the kindness from the museum managers to let the admission free of charge.

Well worth a visit to this incredible art collection. Well set out and displayed with viewers in mind. Excellent art and more than a sprinkling of stellar names....Essen is very lucky!!!

And free entrance for us was the perfect icing on the cake. Do not miss this place!! ????

Impressive collection of modern art. You can find pretty much every famous artist here: Matisse, Cézannes, Van Gogh, Kirschner and many others. Even more amazing the entrance is free. Only for special exhibit there is a fee. The museum cafe is excellent as well. Parking garage is just underground, easy and not expensive.

The museum looks very modern just like the art pieces inside. There is a free area of museum that is accessible without ticket. It's very interesting and filled with knowledge.
