The hotel is clean, the staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. I expected to find the usual toiletries in the room so this explains the missing star. Food was relatively good and plentiful.
I would recommend this hotel without reservations.

I stayed here for one night and wish i could have stayed more. Room was very nice with comfortable bed and all amenities one could ask for. There was also a big choice for breakfast and very friendly staff.

I grew up in a coal mining town and my family has generations of coal miners in it. So you can imagine how pleased I was that a coal miner watched me use the toilet and go for a shower in the morning. Above the bed is a picture of a coal mining tunnel, that also kind of acts like a ceiling mirror, and you can imagine how nice it is for me to cuddle in feeling like I am deep inside the earth in a carved out crevice. If you listen hard enough you can faintly hear the chip chip chip sounds from the pickaxes. The wi-fi, considering I was so far down, was really good and free of charge. The room was a little small but perfectly fine for a short business trip. Price was reasonable and the staff very pleasant. The next time I am in Dortmund, I will once again look to sleep down in the depths. Oh and the power refresh was a nice touch so that I could wipe off the coal dust... Vitalised and refreshed!

Hotel Esplanade is a wonderful privately run oasis in central Dortmund. The rooms are all well designed and immaculately clean, the breakfast service offers just the right range and the staff are always friendly and helpful. The hotel is dealing with hygiene during the pandemic extremely well, this feels like a safe place to stay. Highly recommended!

Location was very good, very near the center of Dortmund and within walking distance of the train station.
On our departure date (fairly early) we received an extensive breakfast package.
On arrival the lady from the reception told us that we had booked a small (?) room, but for 20 € more could have a larger one. Strang, nothing was mentioned about small or bigger room during the booking. We think that once this hotel has finished the construction works this should be a beautiful hotel. But the work inside and outside were disturbing and the name "Zen" is not worthy for this period. There was not much to notice about the breakfast buffet. Sandwiches were gone. Milk on the table was gone. Pancakes gone. Waffles gone. 1/3 filled thermos with coffee. And the staff (man) was not really friendly and everything we asked was accompanied by a sigh. We were at least at 8.00 at the breakfast table and the breakfast lasted until 10.00.
Mister of the breakfast, perhaps a good advice. If you do not like your job, look for something else. People pay good money to be treated better.
