I am a vegetarian but I cannot resist to volcano rolls. We discovered Zen 6 years ago I guess. I always order the same thing when I go there. A glass of Plum wine as drink. ????Mango Salad with Yuzu dressing as starter ???? and Volcano Rolls. Before they were combining all volcano rolls who ordered like a volcano mountain which was crazy ???? Not sure if they still do it though. We basically forgot to ask this time. And they were bringing warm towel. The staff is always extremely friendly. They can speak English as well. They have now two different places. The one in Bachemerstr is kind of better. Not sure why but the food taste better there. Still both places are great for me.

FOOD u0026 DRINKS
The menu takes different approaches in Japanese ciuisine. We ordered the Tofu Steak, the Iberico Grill and had some homemade ice teas. Before we are going into details I like to mention that the portions are pretty small for the price but that is maybe Cologne for you.
I had the Iberico Grill which was their take on a Tonkatsu made with Iberico pork meat. To me the quality was good but maybe a slightly bit overdone. Maybe one or two minutes less would have been perfect. I was mostly disappointed in the crust. It felt more German than Japanese. I was missing the airy yet super crispy crunch of japanese panko crumbs.
The Tofu steak was very plain in my opinion and could benefited from some more crunch on the outside for more texture.
The drinks unfortunately were lukewarm and had not one single cube of ice on a very warm summer day.

SERVICE
The staff friendly and service was fast and professional. No complaints.

ATMOSPHERE
I love the interior design. It went with the times and still had a touch of Japan.

RATING
The quality of the food was fine even though I think the technique could be improved to make the dishes stand out more. Currently it is very simple and not very exciting. That goes for the taste and the presentation. I personally rate the food three stars but the overall experience four stars.

I don’t how they do it, but it is really the best sushi in Cologne!! Prices are medium. Presentation is perfect.
I just was looking for something nice in Instagram andI I found a photo of the Mango salad from them. I immediately wanted to eat it. And I must say that the taste was amazing!

Great food and service. The best sushi so far in Germany! We got udon, sushi rolls, edamame, gyoza, and tempura. We will be back.

Real japanese kitchen in Cologne. Very good traditional japanese kitchen in the heart of the city. Start with sesame seaweed, miso soup or sweet sour salmon. Main course: Sushi, Sashimi, Grill. Ramen of course homemade. For Desserts: Black Sesame Icecream or traditional Matcha Ice.
The Souterrain is really japanese style.
The service is absolutely professional.
Zen Cologne is just very good.

Overpriced. 8.80€ for fried chicken without any sauce. Had to pay 2€ just to get some rice. Small bowl of course. Waitress was friendly.

Delicious! Our server was so sweet and the food was so heartwarming, definetly a nice place to eat some Udon Noodles after a long walk around the city, it just brings you back to life. Be mindful of the servers if you're coming after 10, they close the kitchen after 10:30. Next time I'm trying the sushi!
