Hardcore bar with dealers of all sorts walking in and out every minute. The drinks are cheap and there's a jukebox to play music at will. You can get pretty much any drug at any point in the night, quite awesome. Don't stare at people for too long or you might get wounded before getting to the door. A total must

A 24-7 bar in Berlin. Christ, this city really doesn't want me to escape with my liver in tact. Great spot full of interesting locals and tourists who stumble in from nearby closing bars. A bit smoky but that's my only complaint.

If you like places with an edge, very interesting people, sometimes a little too edgy, then you'll love this place. It is literally the last place open most days which is why it gets so busy. It is probably the last place you would actually want to go but it fascinates me.

One of the few public urban spots in which people of uneloquent wisdom and laid back honesty come together. This bar has an open heart for everyone up for a drink and a talk and without much effort (but a myriad of years of experience and tradition) maintains a strict sense of conviviality. The jukebox is inviting. No one ever complained about a musical decision despite the fact that everybody needs to blend into the atmosphere provided by it. It's rare to find yourself free of judgment. Here you learn it intuitively. Part of it are low boundaries and an overall affordability. Some of my best evenings, nights and mornings in this city included a visit of the most nondescript manner. Since it's technically never closed it might look like a routine but it's a challenge to drop by. Even when life around or inside gets tough this is the last place to lose your composure in. Try and try again.

Einer der wenigen Flecken, in denen fast instinktiv Menschen zusammenkommen, die das Leben weise gemacht hat, ohne dass man es ihnen auf den ersten Blick anmerkt. Man bleibt unprätentiös und ehrlich, nimmt alles in allem gelassen. So gehört es sich für eine Kneipe. Und diese hier macht es sich ganz in diesem Sinne zum ungeschriebenen Auftrag herzlich einladend und aufgeschlossen für jede/n zu sein, der/dem nach einem Getränk und einem Gespräch ist. Jahre an Erfahrung sind da zu einer sympathischen Tradition geworden. (Ich weiß nicht, ob es stimmt, aber man glaubt es gern: die Kneipe ist seit etwa 40 Jahren geöffnet, und zwar durchweg, war also seitdem nie geschlossen.) Es wird Wert darauf gelegt, den Sinn fürs Mit- und Nebeneinander nicht zu verlieren. Die Jukebox lädt zum Stöbern ein und egal worauf die Musikwahl fällt - Beschwerden darüber gibt es in der Regel nicht, sondern viel eher Neugier und anerkennende Blicke, wenn mal etwas aus der Schatzkiste geholt wird. So ungestört und frei von ablehnender Gleichgültigkeit lebt es sich selten. Hier lernt man intuitiv, wie gut das in Geselligkeit geht. Die Einstiegshürden sind gering: die zentrale Lage so ziemlich in der Mitte der Stadt, niedrige Preise, entspannte Atmosphäre und großzügige Öffnungszeiten legen einen Abstecher nahe. Einige meiner besten Berliner Abende, Nächte und Morgen habe ich in der Roten Rose verbracht und manchmal war es unbeschreiblich. Man muss sich dazu überwinden lernen. Im Laden geht es eigentlich immer lebendig zu, doch kaum einmal ist übermäßiger Andrang zu verbuchen. Es ist immer ein Platz frei. Die Herausforderung besteht darin, ihn mit der eigenen Präsenz auszufüllen. Ich empfehle es, sie immer und immer wieder anzunehmen.
